Chess Tactics #1

Filed under: Improve Your Chess Game — admin @ 2:23 am

Posting a tactical position from a recent match of mine on FICS. I am planning on posting these types of videos when I get interesting positions from my matches. It’s black to move – see if you can find the mate before I go over the answer!

  3. What about … Qxa3 Rxa3 c1=Q+ Nd1 Qxd1+ Qe1 Qxe1# ? That would be a possible queen sac too.

  5. I believe the rook check would have been the best move! Check mate if the rook or knight captures rook!

  8. Its strange: i looked at Rb1 first but didnt think that would lead to much so i decided the queen sac would be both beautiful and winning. Almost like an optical illusion. In the end it doesnt matter ofc, but perhaps i could learn something from this.

  10. Whites whole problem is the king is boxed in

  11. also if white does not exchange the queen then black can check mate with the queen along the diagonal.

  12. i’m thinking black queen cuts the white knight. this allows for the f file rook to get to f8, threatening the back rank black rook and threatening a passed pawn.

too late for white i think here.

  18. RB1+ – NXB1 QE1#

    Comment by 1greenbunny — March 19, 2010 @ 10:37 am

  19. To avoid that situation you can play easily 1… Qxa3
    He cant answer 2. RxQa3 because of 2 … c1#
The only possibility for white now is 2. Na2 Rb1 and white is gameover no opposite if he takes 3. RxRb1 or 3.Nc1
    2. Qa4 is impossible either because black takes the queen and gets the pawn to queen which is mate also.
This I think would be the simplest line to win the game, perhaps I missed something, please tell me then. greetings

  20. Hi,

I did not read the other comments, I think someone perhaps saw the same. I will write some thoughts I had.
    The line you choosed could end with a rook instead of a queen if he plays: 1….QxNc3 2.QxQc3 Rb1 3.Qe1 .RxQe1 4. RxRe1 Rb8
Now he would play 5. Kf1 it follows …c1 and the pawn becomes a Queen which is beaten by 5…RxQc1

  21. I think that the white rook taking the black bishop lost the game for white, maybe if instead he had move knight to a2 or e2 could have been better.

  22. By the way, all the moves from the author are to win by force, meaning, keeping the pressure at max, moves like d5, rook to c7, queen takes a3 do not have that kind of pressure, only add advantage, but if you can win by force, right away, those moves waste precious time…

    Comment by l30r1c — March 19, 2010 @ 11:57 am

  23. well, i think the main theme here is keep the pressure, if you give white one chance, maybe could get away, maybe counter. So, i think rook to c7 is not pressure enough, besides, the variations from the author are much better. it´s true, that with R to c7 white loses the knight, but the white queen can go back to try to reinforce the c1 square.

  24. what about rook to c7? i cant see why that wouldnt work??
