The rooks can move in a straight line, but these pieces can move any number of spaces. The bishops must move diagonally, but these pieces can move any number of spaces at a time. The knights must move in a very definite pattern for a definite number of spaces. Each player tries to develop a strategy for moving these pieces within the rules to capture the king of the opponent.
