Chess is played on a board with a unique set of pieces. Each piece has certain moves that are acceptable and these moves make some of the pieces more powerful and moveable than the other pieces on the board. Each player hopes to keep as many of their pieces as possible while making moves around the board. They also hope to capture many of the pieces from their opponent. The winner is the player that captures the king from their opponent by making a series of strategic moves.
Chess Players Use Their Pieces To Capture The King
A good player knows the possible moves for each of his or her pieces. Most of the pieces are called pawns, and a player can only move these pieces one or two spaces at a time. The pawns can usually only move directly forward although there is an exception to this pattern. The pawns and the other pieces protect the most important piece, the king. The object of the game is to capture the king of the opponent. Although the king is the most important piece, it is not the most versatile or powerful. In fact, the queen is the piece that has the most versatility. The queen can move in any direction over any number of spaces. The rooks, knights and bishops also have a limited number of moves.
The rooks can move in a straight line, but these pieces can move any number of spaces. The bishops must move diagonally, but these pieces can move any number of spaces at a time. The knights must move in a very definite pattern for a definite number of spaces. Each player tries to develop a strategy for moving these pieces within the rules to capture the king of the opponent. The game is only as difficult as each opponent.
